Joburg Ballet will host two of the world’s major international ballet stars when Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov of The Royal Ballet perform the leading roles in Don Quixote at the Joburg Theatre in October 2023.
Nuñez and Muntagirov will dance on Friday 6 October at 19h00 and Sunday 8 October at 14h00. The other performances during the eight performance season, which runs from 29 September to 8 October will feature Joburg Ballet dancers in the leading roles.
The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra will play for all performances except the morning matinees, at 11h00 on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 October.
Commenting on the visit by Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov, Joburg Ballet CEO Esther Nasser said: “Joburg Ballet is thrilled to have engaged Ms Nuñez and Mr Muntagirov as guest artists for Don Quixote. They were scheduled to appear with the company in March 2020 but the pandemic intervened. Now, three-and-a-half years later, South African audiences have the opportunity to watch one of ballet’s most acclaimed partnerships on the stage of the Joburg Theatre. Our grateful thanks go to The Michel Tesson Trust and Friends of the Ballet for the generous support which has helped make the season of Don Quixote possible.”
Italy-based South African ballet producer Angela Malan, who will stage Don Quixote for Joburg Ballet, said: “Few ballets equal Don Quixote in capturing classical ballet at its most exuberant and dazzling and I am looking forward to working with Joburg Ballet in bringing this scintillating classic to life. It is the perfect ballet to introduce Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov to Johannesburg audiences as well as to showcase Joburg Ballet’s own wonderful dancers.”
Set in the bustling Spanish seaport of Barcelona, Don Quixote tells the story of beautiful, audacious Kitri and her love for the dashing but poor Basilio. Her father, however, has more ambitious plans for his headstrong daughter, hoping to marry her off to a wealthy, foppish suitor. In the end love conquers all in a cascade of exhilarating classical showpieces.
The Joburg Ballet dancers who will be sharing the leading roles with the Royal Ballet guest artists are, in the role of the audacious, high spirited Kitri, Tammy Higgins, Monike Cristina and Darragh Hourrides and in the role of the dashing Basilio Revil Yon, Ivan Domiciano and Ruan Galdino. The performance cast dates will be announced by producer Angela Malan at the end of August.
Joburg Ballet is delighted that dancers from WGRUV Dance Company will augment Joburg Ballet for Don Quixote. Sharing the stage with WGRUV Dance Company aligns with Joburg Ballet’s ongoing endeavours to forge closer ties between the ballet company and the broader dance community.
No ticket discounts are available for the Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov performances. For all other performances Joburg Ballet offers attractive discounts which include the Half Price Opening Night, Early Bird booking, morning matinees and discounts for Friends of the Ballet members, pensioners, groups 10+ and children 4-7.
