JoziStyle: Architect of Influence
Award-Winning Digital Marketing Agency in Johannesburg
I had such a pleasant surprise when it was confirmed that JoziStyle won the best Email Marketing and Digital Campaign Agency in Johannesburg at the 2023 Media Innovator Awards.
(That’s because I’m a media innovator, Baby!)
It began last year when I received a notification from the organisers that I’d been shortlisted for best Email Marketing and Digital Campaign Agency in Johannesburg. I never really got involved because I thought you have to post your links and ask people to vote for you but I often find those online polls are skewed because it’s always the person with the most followers who wins and then they go all Sally Field, “Oh, I’m so surprised! Oh, I am so surprised!”
It is usually the first person to ask their followers to vote for them who gets the most awards so it’s not really an even playing field. You know if the organisers put out a list of the top 10 nominees and they said vote for your favourite you will find you’d have a far more equal reflection of the voters’ interest.
It would be more democratic like a Republican vs. Democrat election- or South African election, but I’ve noticed that it’s like the first agency to put out the link or the call to action is the one who gets the most votes so when I was invited to participate in the Media Innovator Awards I thought I’m just going to sit this one out and let it run its course. I forgot about it but by some strange quirk of fate, I received an update that JoziStyle was no longer just a nominee but had been shortlisted to win.
It was towards the end of last year that (Just before Christmas!) that I received confirmation from the organisers that I had actually won best Email Marketing and Digital Campaign Agency in Johannesburg in the 2023 Media Innovator Awards. I swear I can’t get tired of saying it aloud!
What makes it even more exciting is that all of the candidates are shortlisted from around the world- so I don’t know how I got onto their radar, and I don’t know who nominated me, but I’m so grateful and thankful for the recognition.
I see a lot of these awards and I think they’re a bit hypocritical because everyone who pays to enter wins an award. Even the losers get a participation trophy.
There are certain media awards where they award the best media people or the best publicist or the best marketer – and they all these wonderful trophies, acknowledgements and dinners, but the ironic thing is that everybody who enters wins an award. It’s not a stretch of the imagination that everybody’s going to pay to be entered. So let’s just say it is R2,000 or R100,000 to enter a competition where everybody wins an award. You could get gold, silver, or a bronze award. You could also get a nasty paper certificate with a gold stamp. Everybody who pays to win an award wins an award- and I imagine the more categories you enter the higher your chances are of winning some of those awards.
I do look at some of the media awards where they’ve got 101 different categories that are all a variation on the same theme: “best radio show in the morning” vs “best radio show in the late morning” vs. “best radio show in the brunch section” vs “best radio show in the morning on an AM signal” vs “best radio show on a brunch time FM signal” it’s just a never-ending list of categories and the more of those categories that you enter the higher your chances of winning possibly a silver award or a gold award or platinum award or some kind of an award.
I think they’re all a money-making exercise. It doesn’t matter if it’s a PR award, advertising award, or a restaurant award, every time I see an award ceremony or an award platform where people have to pay to enter I know that every single award structure works on the same mechanism you’ve got to pay to enter and the more you enter the more your chances improve of actually winning a better prize.
At the end of the awards, you’ll see everybody going on about how surprised and thrilled they are that they won. I just wonder how surprised they would be if they had to pay to enter and didn’t win anything.
So, that was my philosophy when I saw the Media Innovator Awards nomination, I thought we’ll see what happens if I don’t pay to enter. And then I won!
Obviously, now that I’m fresh back from the Innovation in Business Media Innovator Awards I am never going to stop talking about it.
What I think was very interesting about the awards was I was thinking That at JoziStyle we are not just PR gurus we’re not just digital marketers and content creators.
